Objective To measure body weight, organ weight, and lengths of body, head and intestinal canal, and to calculate organ coefficient(organ weight/body weight ratio) in SD and Wistar rats aged 5 to 7 weeks. Methods The animals were fasted 12 hours and weighed, and then they were sacrificed with an intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital sodium(45 mg/kg).First,the animals' head length, body length and tail length were measured with a ruler, and the organs were weighted and organ coefficients were calculated. And then the lengths of small intestine, cecum, ileum, and rectum, and total length of intestinal canal were also measured. Results There were very significant differences(P<0.01) in organ coefficients of heart, liver, spleen, kidney, brain, testis and ovary between the 7 weeks and 5 weeks in SD rats, and there were very significant differences(P<0.01) in organ coefficients of heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, thymus and brain organ between the 6,7 weeks and 5 weeks in Wistar rats. There were very significant differences(P<0.01) in the lengths of small intestine, cecum, colon, rectum of male Wistar rats between the 7 weeks and 5 weeks. There were significant differences(P<0.0) in lengths of head, body and tail of Wistar rats between the 6,7 weeks and 5 weeks. Conclusion There are significant differences in organ coefficient, the digestive tract length and body measurement in SD and Wistar rats aged 5 to 7 weeks, and there are different variations in different strains and sexes.
