Initiative on the Use of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) for the Journal of Laboratory Animal Science
  • Initiative on the Use of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) for the Journal of Laboratory Animal Science

To standardize the application of artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC) in the preparation of scientific research papers, uphold academic integrity, and ensure the originality, authenticity and scientific validity of journal articles, this initiative is issued in accordance with the specifications of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and management norms of outstanding domestic journals, combined with the actual publication practice of this journal.

    1. General Principles

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) refers to models and related technologies capable of generating content including text, images, audio, video, data, codes, patterns, etc. Current AIGC models lack comprehensive capabilities for scientific research evaluation and carry risks such as factual bias and information leakage. The Journal encourages authors to appropriately use AIGC to assist research work. However, GAI shall not be listed as an author of the paper. All signed authors bear full responsibility for the entire content, conclusions and authenticity of cited references in the paper. The Editorial Office will conduct AIGC screening for submitted manuscripts, yet screening results serve only as a reference and shall not be the sole basis for judging improper AIGC use in manuscripts.

    2. Specifications for AIGC Use

    2.1 Requirements for Authorship

GAI, its products and development teams shall not be listed as paper authors. All signed authors must be accountable for the paper content and relevant supporting materials.

    2.2 Requirements for Reference Citation

Content generated by GAI shall not be directly cited as references. Authors shall verify outputs from GAI, accurately cite authoritative original literature, and check reference information.

    2.3 Prohibited Scenarios

Authors are forbidden from using GAI to alter or manipulate research processes and results. It is not permitted to use GAI to write the full manuscript or core sections of a paper (including Methods, Results, Discussion, etc.). Fabricated generation of data, figures, tables, audio and video materials via GAI is also prohibited. All the above acts will be deemed academic misconduct.

    2.4 Requirements for Usage Statement

If GAI is adopted to assist manuscript preparation during paper creation (e.g., data sorting, language polishing, literature retrieval, etc.), authors must truthfully declare in the Materials and Methods section or the Author Contribution Statement at the end of the article: the name and version of the GAI tool/platform, purpose and methods of use, and which parts of the manuscript were generated. Relevant supplementary materials shall be submitted.

Example: Author XX used [name and version number of specific GAI tool/platform] to [purpose and method of use, including prompts], which generated [sections or content of the paper].

2.5 Peer Review and Manuscript Revision

Reviewers, journal editorial board members and editors are prohibited from using GAI to process, review or revise manuscripts. Manuscripts and supplementary materials shall not be uploaded to public GAI platforms without authorization. All review comments and revision instructions must be manually prepared, with reviewers and editors taking corresponding responsibilities. Reviewers shall truthfully inform the Editorial Office if improper AIGC use is identified in manuscripts.

    3. Penalties for Violations

If authors breach the above AIGC regulations, they will be added to the journal’s dishonest author list. The Editorial Office will reject the manuscript directly or retract the published article. Where information leakage, infringement or other consequences arise due to reviewers, such reviewers will be barred from participating in all review and publication-related work of the journal and shall bear corresponding legal liabilities.

    4. Supplementary Provisions

This initiative shall take effect on the date of issuance. The Editorial Office will continuously monitor advances in AIGC technology and revise and update this initiative in due course.
